How to play 2048
The board is a 4 by 4 grid. Every move slides all the tiles as far as they go in one direction. When two tiles with the same number meet, they merge into one tile worth their sum: two 2s make a 4, two 4s make an 8, and so on. After every move a new tile appears in an empty square, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4.
You reach 2048 by merging your way up: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. The game ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything. Your score goes up by the value of every merged tile, so bigger merges score more.
The corner strategy for 2048
The most reliable 2048 strategy is to keep your biggest tile in one corner and build everything around it.
- Pick a corner, for example the bottom left, and get your biggest tile there.
- Fill the bottom row in falling order away from the corner: 512, 256, 128, 64.
- Use mostly two moves, down and left in this example, to keep tiles pressed into the corner.
- Use the third move, right, when you are stuck, but only when the bottom row is full so the corner tile cannot slide away.
- Avoid the fourth move, up, which pulls the big tile out of its corner. Use it only when it is the only move left.
Done well, the board becomes a snake: the bottom row falls from the corner, the row above continues the chain in the other direction, and every merge feeds the next one down the line.
How to win 2048: tips for a crowded board
- Keep the bottom row full. A full row cannot slide sideways, so your corner tile stays put even when you have to press the third move.
- Merge small tiles early. A board full of scattered 2s and 4s is how most runs end. Clear them while they are next to each other.
- Think one tile ahead. Before you move, ask where the new tile will drop. Moves that leave the empty squares away from your chain are safer.
- Don't chase a merge across the board. If two matching tiles are far apart, leave them. Breaking the chain to join them usually costs more than it gains.
- If the corner tile moves out, put it back at once. A tile that sits outside the corner for a few moves soon gets trapped behind small numbers.
Can you win 2048 every time?
No. New tiles appear in random squares, so even a perfect player sometimes gets a board with no good move. A solid corner strategy wins far more often once you have practised it, and many players keep going after 2048 to chase 4096 and beyond.
