Brain games for adults should be short, fair and a little hard. These are the free ones on Arena13 that I would put in that box: each one tests something different, most have a daily puzzle that is the same for everyone, and none of them needs an account or a download.
One honest note first: I am not going to promise these games make you smarter. Nobody has good evidence that a puzzle game raises your intelligence. What they do is give your attention something sharp to do for a few minutes, and that is reason enough.
Timing: Blind Ten
Blind Ten starts a stopwatch, shows it for three seconds, then hides it. You tap when you think it has reached the target. Your score is 1,000 minus how many milliseconds you were off, and you need to be within a hundredth of a second for a perfect. The daily target is the same for everyone, between 6 and 15 seconds, and you get three tries. It is the purest test here of how well you keep time in your head.
Rules and focus: Rule Pile
Rule Pile starts simple: red cards go left, blue cards go right. Every five correct cards, a new rule is added on top, and the newest rule that applies to a card decides where it goes. Up to eight rules can pile up, the time per card shrinks as you score, and one wrong side ends the run. It tests whether you can hold changing rules in your head under pressure. The daily deck is the same for everyone.
Logic: Chess Puzzles and Mine Sweep
- Chess Puzzles gives you a real position from the Lichess puzzle database and asks for the winning moves. The daily puzzle is the same for everyone, and a wrong move just says "Try again". The climb mode starts easy and gets harder as you solve, with three lives.
- Mine Sweep is pure deduction: every number tells you how many mines touch that square. Your first tap is always safe. If you have never really understood it, how to play Minesweeper explains the numbers and the common patterns.
Knowledge: Daily Trivia
Daily Trivia asks everyone the same 10 questions each day, four easy, four medium and two hard, with 20 seconds each and one try. A fast right answer is worth up to twice the points. If you want to warm up first, try these 30 trivia questions with answers.
Words: the daily word and Word Guess
- The daily word is a five-letter word to find in six tries. Green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word somewhere, grey means it is not. Everyone gets the same word, a new one arrives at midnight, and a hint ladder helps if you are stuck.
- Word Guess plays the same way without the daily limit, with words from 4 to 11 letters.
Planning ahead: Merge 2048 and Tile Tray
- Merge 2048 is about patience: slide tiles, merge equal numbers, keep the big ones in a corner. 2048 strategy has the method.
- Tile Tray asks you to clear stacked tiles three at a time without filling a seven-slot tray. Its daily boards are the same for everyone. There are tips in tile matching game tips.
A five-minute daily routine
- The daily word, to wake up.
- Daily Trivia, for the facts.
- The daily chess puzzle, for logic.
- Three tries at Blind Ten, to finish on a clean shot.
Every daily puzzle posts to a leaderboard that starts fresh each day, so you can see how you compare with everyone who played the same puzzle.
How it was made
I wrote this with help from Claude, an AI assistant, and checked every rule against the games' code. If you think a game here is not really a brain game, or I missed one, tell me.
